SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya or Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high. It is a site of historical and archaeological. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, King Kasyapabuilt his new capital and royal palace on the top of this rock. He also built a gateway in the form of a massive lion on a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock. Sigiriya is a World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

SRI MAHA BODHI

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a Sacred Fig tree in the Mahamewna Gardens, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is said to be the right-wing branch (southern branch) from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. It was planted in 288 BC, and is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. Today it is one of the most sacred relics of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka and respected by Buddhists all over the world. The other fig trees that surround the sacred tree protect it from storms and animals such as monkeys, bats, etc. In April 2014, the government banned all construction within 500 meters of the tree. Only construction that obviously will not harm the tree will be allowed.

According to Ramayana, the famous Indian epic, the legendary King Ravana kidnapped Prince Sita and kept her captive in the caves behind this waterfall now known as the Ravana Ella Cave. During the rainy season, the beauty of this waterfall is enhances and resembles a kind of flower with withering petals.

KANDYAN CULTURAL SHOW

The Kandyan Dance is iconic to Sri Lanka. "Ves" dance, the most popular form of the Kandyan dance, originated from an ancient purification ritual. The elaborate ves costume, particularly the headgear, is considered sacred and is believed to belong to the deity, Kohomba. Only toward the end of the 19th century were ves dancers first invited to perform outside the precincts of the Kankariya Temple at the annual Kandy Esala Perahera festival.

RUWANWELISEYA

The Ruwanwelisaya is a stupa that is considered a marvel for its architectural qualities. It is sacred to many Buddhists all over the world. It was built by King Dutugemunu c. 140 B.C., who became lord of Sri Lanka after a war in which the Chola King Elara, was defeated. This is one of the Solosmasthana (the 16 places of veneration) and the Atamasthana (the 8 places of veneration in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura). The stupa is one of the world's tallest monuments, standing at 103 m (338 ft) and with a circumference of 290 m (951 ft). The stupa was an ancient ruin in the 19th century. After fundraising efforts by Sinhalese bhikkhu, the stupa was renovated in the early 20th century. The the final crowning of the stupa took place in 1940. The largest Stupa after Ruwanwelisaya built was the Kotmale Mahaweli Maha Seya. This stupa took 33 years and 3 months to complete.

CEYLON TEA FIELDS AND FACTORY

Sri Lanka was formerly known as Ceylon. The humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall of the central highlands provide a climate that favours the production of high-quality tea. Tea production became one of the main contributors to the economy of Sri Lanka. What many do not know is that Sri Lanka is one of the few countries where each tea leaf is picked by hand rather than by mechanization of modern technology. In general, these tea plants require constant nurturing and attention and the two leaves and a bud, which have the flavour and aroma, are skilfully plucked by mostly women.

YALA NATIONAL PARK

Yala National Park is a wildlife sanctuary that is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, leopards and aquatic birds. It has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. It covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi) and is one of the best places for sightings of wild Elephants and also well-known for its variety of wild animals.

GAL VIHARAYA

This sacred Buddhist temple of the highest veneration in Sri Lanka, was a royal place of the Kandyan kings of the past. It houses Gautama Buddha's left canine tooth which is enshrined in a stupa decked with gems and gold jewelleries. Please note that you will not be able to see the tooth itself and the door to the stupa is usually closed. It is usually showcased only on rare special occasions.

GALLWAYSLAND FOREST

Galway's Land National Park is a a wildlife sanctuary situated within the city limits of Nuwara Eliya. The park was declared to conserve the montane ecosystems. Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka considers that the Victoria park of Nuwara Eliya and the Galway's Land as two of the most significant birding sites in Sri Lanka. Galway's Land harbours about 20 rare migrant bird species and 30 native species. Apart from the avifauna, the park has valuable floral species of both native and foreign origin.

Enjoy activities like kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, yachting, water skiing, scuba diving and more. Those who want to get a perfect tan or just need to relax, de-stress and rejuvenate you mind, body and soul. The beaches of Sri Lanka are the ideal destination for all. The best of the Southern beaches include Tangalla, Beruwala, Mirissa, Bentota and Unawatuna with varying options including chic boutique hotels, glowing coral reefs, gentle sandbars and undiscovered corners of paradise. Although Sri Lanka’s southern beaches has been long discovered by the international traveler the east coast is yet to be fully discovered. The best known among the Eastern beaches is the Arugam Bay, the surfing haven of the region. Uppuveli beach is also open to the sun seekers after a three decade long civil war. On the Western corner of the country is the Negambo lagoon. A favourite with local and foreign visitors, the lagoon is famed for lobster harvesting. Galle Face Green, a half a kilometer stretch between Galle Road and Indian Ocean is the playground of the Colombians.

WATADAGE

Watadage is a type of Buddhist structure that is more or less unique to the architecture of ancient Sri Lanka that may have some Indian influence. Watadages were built around small stupas for its protection. Often enshrined in the stupa is a relic. Circular in shape, they were commonly constructed from stone and brick and adorned with elaborate stone carvings. Watadages may have also had a wooden roof, supported by a number of stone columns arranged in several concentric rows. Only ten Watadages now remain in Sri Lanka. The builders of many of these monuments are unknown, as are their time of creation. The oldest of such construction is believed to be the one surrounding the Thuparamaya. The best form of a Watadage is generally believed to be the Polonnaruwa Watadage.

SEETHA AMMAN HINDU TEMPLE

Seetha Amman Temple is located approximately 1 kilometre from Hakgala Botanical Garden and 5 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya. The temple is located in the village of Seetha Eliya (also known as Seeta Eliya). This place is believed to be the site where Seeta was held captive by King Ravana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her as specified in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Ravana’s elephant.
